Clarence Samuel Layell, 99, passed away peacefully July 14, 2009 at Oaks of Carolina Nursing Home in Raleigh where he had resided since December, 2006. Prior to moving to Raleigh he resided at Maple Ridge Apartments in Elkin. He was born January 4, 1910 to the late Joseph Alexander Layell and Clara Bell Butcher in the Salem Fork community. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Edna Thompson Layell.He was also preceded in death by four siblings, Bessie Byrd, Elsie Burchette, Carlie Layell and Phola Layell. He worked at Chatham Manufacturing Company for 39 years and retired to farm, fish and enjoy family and grandchildren. Clarence is survived by his daughter, Barbara L. Epley and husband, Phil of Raleigh and son, Sam Layell of Lumberton, NC; his sister, Dorothy L. Blevins of Elkin; two grandchildren and one great grandson and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at Pleasant View Baptist Church in State Road followed by the service at 2:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Kenny Wood officiating.Interment will be at Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road.
