Helen Klauder Mumford

Mrs. Helen Klauder Mumford, age 91, passed away, Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at Brookridge Baptist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC where she had lived since 2002. She was born March 26, 1915 in Philadelphia, PA to Rudolph and Elizabeth Street Klauder. Following graduation, from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, she worked as a secretary. Upon her marriage in 1941 she moved to North Carolina with her late husband, the Reverend Hubert S. Mumford. She served alongside her husband as he pastored churches in Matthews and Marshville, as he served as Director of Missions for Yates Baptist Association in Durham, and as he served as interim pastor of Edgemont Baptist Church in Durham. Mrs. Mumford worked as the church secretary at Holloway Street Baptist Church in Durham from 1958 until her retirement in 1980. In the mid-80's she returned to work part-time as secretary at Edgemont Baptist Church and continues as part-time secretary or doing volunteer secretarial work there until her move to Winston-Salem. Throughout the years, Mrs. Mumford was active in many areas of her church on the local level, and served on the Executive Board and as Recording Secretary for the North Carolina Women's Missionary Union. She was a former WMU Director for Yates Association, former member of the Durham Opti-Mrs. Club, Kings Daughters, and was an officer with the Eastern Star in Marshville. Mrs. Mumford represented North Carolina WMU as a 2006 recipient of a North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award. While in Winston-Salem, she was a member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the "Singing Seniors" She was also involved in many activities at Brookridge, including the choir and a Women on Mission group. Mrs. Mumford is survived by a daughter, Betty Ann Pittman and husband Carson of State Road; three sons, Hugh Mumford and wife Agnes Anne of Disputanta, VA, Hal Mumford and wife Emilie Stolpa of New Orleans, LA and Floyd Mumford of Durham; four grandchildren, Meredith Pittman of Raleigh, Dr. Stephanie Smeir and husband Issam of Wheaton, IL; Michael Mumford of Arlington, VA; and the Rev. Phillip Mumford and wife Gwen of Durham; two great-grandchildren, John Mumford of Durham and Laith Smeir of Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be conducted by Dr. David Hughes and Rev. Maurice Briggs in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2006 with a visitation to follow. A visitation will also be held in Durham on Sunday, November 5, 2006 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. Gattis Perry and Rev. Phillip Mumford at Restlawn Memorial Gardens on ACC Blvd in Raleigh off Highway 70. Those able to attend any of the services are invited to wear pink as Mrs. Mumford loved wearing any shade of pink In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Heck-Jones Fund of NC WMU, PO Box 1107, Cary, NC 27512-1107; or to Brookridge Baptist Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
