Mrs. Mattie Brendle Baker, age 95, of Parkwood Place, passed away Friday, July 01, 2005. Mrs. Baker was born June 20, 1910 in Surry County to Floyd Author & Flora Belle Campbell Brendle. Mrs. Baker was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin. She was owner of F.A. Brendle & Son Grocery. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the Yadkin Valley Garden Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther G. Baker; a sister, Myrtle Vestal Pruitt; a brother, David Brendle; a nephew, Harold Brendle. Survivors include: Nephews, Doug Brendle and wife Lydia of Winston-Salem, Floyd Brendle and wife Kitty, Buddy Vestal and wife Emaline of Elkin; Nieces, Flora Jean Moxley and husband Hayden of Jonesville; Francis Darnell and husband Oscar of Oregon, Ga.; special friend Sandy Butler. A graveside service will be held Sunday, July 3, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery by Dr. Bill Johnson. Mrs. Baker will lie instate at Hodges Funeral Home Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Eden Animal Fund c/o Hugh Chatham Nursing Center.
