Mrs. Mae DeEtte Newman Slawter, age 88 of Elkin, who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 24, 2011. She was born Agust 5, 1922 in Surry County to Robert Clarence and Ina Belle Smith Newman. DeEtte was an avid homemaker and graced her family and friends with her wonderful cooking. She knew no strangers and everyone was always welcome in her home. DeEtte and her husband Gilbert Andrew Slawter were married on October 31, 1942 and were happily married for 63 wonderful years. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Andrew Slawter; brothers: Sammy Newman, Frank Newman, David Newman, and Wade Newman and sister Marie Newman. Survivors include her children Larry Slawter and his wife Dianne, Steve Slawter and his wife Darlene, and Rick Slawter and his wife Bonnie; brothers Windell Newman and his wife Letha Jo, Grady Newman and his wife Betty, Tony Newman and his wife Hilda; sisters Wilma Newman Guyer and her husband Jake and Barbara Newman Hall ; sister-in-law Willie Day Newman; grandchildren: Quinn Slawter and his wife Jennifer, Karen Slawter Perkins and her husband Sherman, Sandy Slawter Williams and her husband Chris, Stephanie Slawter Bullins and her husband Tim, and Jill Slawter Wood and her husband Brad; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Kramm officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 38 State Road, NC 28676. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Healthcare of Elkin for the excellent care and compassion given to DeEtte during her stay.
