State Road Mr. Max Porter Carter, age 85, of Grassy Creek Drive, passed away Friday, December 09, 2005 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Carter was born December 6, 1920 in Wilkes County to Dallas & Myrtle Gilliam Carter. Mr. Carter was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Carter was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was currently employed by Wal-Mart as a greeter and he was also a part-time farmer and cattle dealer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Maretha Carter; two brothers, Alton Carter and George Carter; a sister, Emma Jean McMillan; three half sisters, Jettie Transou, Hattie Johnson and Erma Carter. Survivors include: two daughters, Delores Wong and husband Johnny of Gastonia, Nancy Andrews and husband Jeb of Hickory; a brother, Edsel Carter of Harmony; a sister, Wilsie Draughn of Elkin; three grandchildren, Emily Wong, Carter Wong and Mason Andrews; a special friend, Ruth West of Elkin; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 12, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church by Rev. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Charles Letchoe. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Carter will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
