State Road Mrs. Etta Ardella "Della" Tilley Poplin, age 79, of Poplar Springs Road, went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 25, 2005 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Poplin was born September 19, 1925 in Wilkes County to Early Banner & Sarah Ellen Waddell Tilley. Della was a member of Welcome Valley Baptist Church and was a member of MADD. She was owner of Della's Cake Shop where she provided cakes for Weddings and Birthdays to the area for over 56 years. Della was a kind hearted lady sharing her love and her wonderful baked goods with the community, many of whom had become like a second family to her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bruce Poplin, a son, J.W. Poplin, a daughter-in-law, Nancy Poplin; a grandson, Trevor Poplin; two sisters, Peggy Smith and Oma Rose; one brother Bob Tilley. Survivors include: a son, Jerry Poplin and wife Ruth of Elkin; two daughters, Wanda Holcomb and husband Harold, Teresa Cook all of State Road; a brother, E.B. Tilley, Jr. of Elkin; eight grandchildren, Crystal Morphis and husband Jay, Charity Cranford and husband Shannon, Tammy Wood and husband Keith, Brian Holcomb, Wayne Poplin, Cindy Mullis and husband Michael, Kristi Poplin, and Dustin Cook; seven great grandchildren, Madeline Morphis, Leya Wood, Zoee Wood, Blake Poplin, Brandon Mullis, J'Lynn Poplin and Rylee Poplin and also her many friends and customers. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Dan Merritt and Rev. Finley McCoury. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and at other times at the home of Jerry Poplin 414 Southard Road Elkin, NC 28621. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial be made to American Cancer Society or to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund.
