Mr. Cecil Hardin Hayes, age 86 of State Road, passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 at Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born May 26, 1924 in Surry County to Purvis and Mattie Blackburn Hayes. Mr. Hayes attended Poplar Springs Baptist Church and was a longtime farmer who enjoyed growing tobacco. He was a highly decorated veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Hayes loved his family and friends and people in general; he loved bluegrass music, square dancing, and his bird dogs. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Berk Hayes; two sisters, Wanie Gentry and Dorothy Harp. Survivors include his wife Fairy D. Hayes of the home; son, Tracy H. Hayes and his wife Deanna of State Road; special friends Gurney and Kay Reavis of State Road; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Roger Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by Yadkin VFW post 10346. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017 or to Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 193 Fellowship Way, State Road, NC 28676. The family would like to thank the staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, Mountain Valley Hospice, and Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their kindness shown to the family.
