State Road Mr. Gilbert Andrew Slawter, age 83, of State Road, passed away, Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mr. Slawter was born December 4, 1922 in Surry County to Emory Ellis & Nevada Collins Slawter. Mr. Slawter was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was of the Baptist faith. Gilbert was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many. He loved gardening and sharing his crops with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Pauline Slawter. Survivors include: His wife, DeEtte Newman Slawter of the home; three sons, Larry Slawter and wife Dianne, Steve Slawter and wife Darlene, Rick Slawter and wife Bonnie all of State Road; three brothers, Elbert Slawter of State Road, Hazel Slawter of Flint, Michigan, Wilbert Slawter of Thomasville; two sisters, Thelma Gentry and husband Roger of State Road, Alma Martin and husband Junior of Jonesville; five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Steve Kramm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Slawter will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
