Elkin Mr. Arthur Dixon Hayes, age 85, of N. Wall Street, Elkin, passed away Monday, August 7, 2006 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mr. Hayes was born May 17, 1921 in Ashe County to Horace & Jenny Phillips Hayes. Mr. Hayes was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a Truck Driver with Gardner Mirror and Salem Carriers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rex Hayes and two sisters, Chlorine Transou and Jean Johnson. Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Lucille Alexander Hayes; a son, Mike Hayes and wife Willena of Elkin; a stepdaughter, Barbara Burch and husband, Gayle of Jonesville; two brothers, Clyde Hayes and wife Betty Ruth of Elkin; Howard Hayes of Thomasville; brothers-in-law, Edgar Transou of Elkin, Charles Johnson and his wife Faye of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Ruth Pardue of East Bend, Betty Seagraves and husband Calvin of Greensboro, Annette Robertson and husband Tom of Charlotte, Julia Ann King and husband Alton of Hickory; a sister-in-law, Agnes Hayes of Elkin; two grandchildren, Justin Hayes and wife Mariah of Winston-Salem, Jonathan Hayes of Elkin; a great grandchild, Madden Dixon Hayes; four step grandchildren, Mandy Foster and husband Charlie, Terry Settle, Shane Smith, Jody Settle; five step great grandchildren, Christopher Mays, Maggie Swaim, Heath Foster, Sara Foster and Will Smith. Funeral service will be held Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Gary Byrd and Rev. Danny Dodds. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Hayes will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice 1326 N. Main Street, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
