Sergeant Major Frederick C. "Fritz" Dunow U.S.M.C. Ret. 95 St. Maries resident died July 7, 2011 at St. Maries, ID. He was born June 1, 1916 to Charles and Theresia Doege Dunow at Curtiss, WI. As a young man, he worked in the logging industry in Wisconsin. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.in 1943. He served in the Pacific Theater of War during WWII. He also served in Korea and the Viet Nam War. He served at various other duty stations including El Toro, CA and Lake Meade nea r Las Vegas, NV. during his career. He married Janice Silva May 29, 1965 at Lake Meade Military Base, Nevada. Fritz believed in fighting for his country and helping aid other countries in obtaining the same freedoms all Americans enjoy. He retired as Sgt. Major U.S.M.C. After 24 years in 1967. Fritz and Jan moved to Santa, ID following his retirement. He worked for the Benewah Co. Sheriff's Dept.. He moved to St. Maries in 2006. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and cooking. He was an avid reader of Western and combat military fiction and non-fiction books. He enjoyed listening to Country music. He also enjoyed attending the Marine Corp. Birthday Brunch held in St. Maries. He was a member of St. Maries Masonic Lodge # 63 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Coeur d' Alene, Calam Shriners and the St. Maries Shrine Club. He was also a member of the St. Maries Shrine Club Crutch Patrol and the St. Maries Order of Eastern Star. Fritz also belonged to the St. Maries Elks Lodge. Fritz is survived by his wife Jan residing in St. Maries. Also surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law Sandi and Bob Boeh of Sandpoint and Lois and Les Farmer of Osage Beach, MO. Also surviving is daughter Helen Heath of Everett, WA. Other survivors include his sister-in-law Fumi Dunow of Monticello, UT and sisters Josephine and husband Don Robida, Sisters Bernice Hoff and Paula Arlette all of Wisconsin and 5 grandchildren as well as 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Bill, Harvey and Ollie Dunow and sisters Amelia Coons and Catherine Stochovak. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday July 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries, ID with Pastor Grant Maclean officiating. Masonic services will be held by the St. Maries Lodge and Military rites will be conducted by the Marine Corp. League Pappy Boyington Detatchment # 966 of Coeur d' Alene. A gathering of family and friends will follow services at the St. Maries Masonic Hall. Fritz's final resting place will be Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Maries. Semper Fi.. Visitation will be Wed. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. At Hodge Funeral Home.
