Elkin Eva Steelman Calloway, age 81 of Johnson Ridge Road, passed away November 13, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Calloway was born August 6, 1927, in Yadkin County to John Taylor and Bessie Shore Steelman. Mrs. Calloway received a bachelor's and a master's degree from Appalachian State University. She was a teacher and librarian in Wilkes County and Elkin City schools. She was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church, where she was also the church librarian for a number of years and an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward Calloway; a sister, Margaret Steelman Gough; seven half brothers; two half sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Rose Calloway of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, H.L. "Bobby" Steelman and wife Charlotte of Hamptonville; two sisters, Peggy Steelman Long of Hamptonville, Martha Steelman Sanders of Jonesville; several nieces and nephews. A Graveside service will be held Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Gardens followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson, Rev. Rebecca Maynard and Dr. Jim Everette. Memorials may be made to Elkin First Baptist Church or to the Elkin Public Library. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
