Mrs. Myra Sale Helms, age 102 of Ronda, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011. Mrs. Helms was born July 25, 1909 in Wilkes County to William E and Laura Reeves Sale and was the wife of Thurman Brown Helms of Monroe, NC. She was a graduate of Ronda High School and Appalachian State Teachers College, majoring in Elementary Education. She taught for many years in Wake and Wilkes Counties and retired from the Monroe City Schools as an elementary school librarian. Mrs. Helms was involved in various organizations as an educator: American Association of University Women, Pi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, NCAE, and NEA. She was an active member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and a long-time teacher of the Ruth Walls Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Helms; sister, Ruth S. Walls; brothers, Harold Sale, Fred Sale, and Frank Sale; niece, Pamelia Cromer, and nephew Harold Sale, Jr. Survivors include: nieces, Carol Thompson, Donna Thompson and husband Heath Ford, Linda Thomas and husband Steve; nephew William Sale and wife Judi; ten great nieces and nephews, fifteen great-great nieces and nephews, five great-great-great nieces and nephews, and a special cat, Gracie. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, October 3, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Rex Cranfill officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
