Mrs. Vera Spires Gibson, age 87 passed away Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Gibson was born December 8, 1923 in Columbia, SC to the late Lucius T and Ada Christmus Spires. She was a resident of Walterboro, SC for 40 years where she and her husband Roy Gibson, Jr. operated the Burger Chick restaurant and Walterboro Drive-In Theater. Later in life she worked for Dogwood Hills Country Club as an administrative assistant and volunteered at Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a long time member. She was a devoted wife and mother, and faithfully worked along side her husband in the restaurant, theater, and catering business. Mrs. Gibson loved her family, loved music and singing, laughed often, and continued to have a keen sense of humor throughout her life. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband A.L. "Roy" Gibson, Jr., her stepmother Mildred Green Spires; a son Richard "David" Gibson; a brother Orris Spires; and a sister Thelma Pauley. Survivors include her son A.L. "Roy" Gibson III and his wife Marie of Elkin, NC; two grandsons Matthew Gibson of Charlotte, NC and PFC Benjamin Gibson of Elkin, NC; and a granddaughter Katie Gibson of Elkin, NC. Additional survivors include four sisters Myrtle Housman of Oceanside, CA; Virginia Gheesling of Hendersonville, NC; Mildred Hendley and Jean Cox both of Lexington, SC. A funeral service will be held Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, SC with Rev. Theron Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will follow Monday, December 13, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Sumter Cemetery in Sumter, SC. with Steve Kramm of Poplar Springs Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Walterboro, SC 29488, Mountain Valley Hospice, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621, or Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621. The family is grateful for the love, care, and support from the staff of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice during Mrs. Gibson's extended illness.
