Garvey Cook

Jonesville Mr. Garvey Cook age 83, of Pineland Ave. passed away Saturday February 5, 2005 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mr. Cook was born August 1, 1921 in Yadkin County to Marvin Parker and Clara Adams Cook. Mr. Cook was a loving family man who devoted the last two years of his life helping take care of his wife at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center while keeping up his farming and cattle. Mr. Cook was an outdoorsman who cherished every moment he had working the land in the early mornings unto just before dark. He was a member of Island Ford Baptist Church, a veteran of the US. Army where he served during WWII. He was greatly loved and will be missed dearly. In addition to his parents Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a brother Marvin Cook Jr. Survivors include his wife Hazel Luffman Cook of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, two daughters and son in-laws, Glenda Chapman and husband James, and Brenda Lyon and husband Ray all of Traphill. Two brothers, Jimmy Lee Cook and wife Mildred of Elkin and Buel Cook of Cameron NC. Four sisters, Gertie Weatherman of Jonesville, Violet Doss of Greensboro, Magdalene Gilley and her husband Paul of Jonesville, and Clara Mae Gilley of Winston Salem. Six grandchildren, Kelly Icenhour and husband Jerry of Roan Mt Tn., Brian Chapman and wife Cheri of Traphill, Tracy Chapman and husband Barry of Elkin, Terry Wood and husband Jamie of Traphill, Mark Freeman and wife Kim of Dobson, Kevin Freeman and wife Susan of Elkin. Nine great grandchildren, B.J. and Cody Chapman, Jamie Icenhour, Levi and Jerry Lundsford Jr., Darbey and Gabe Wood, Kasi and Sydney Freeman. Three step grandchildren, Stephen, Neil, and Michael Lyon and familes and three step great grand ghildren Joseph Johnson, Jerrod and Cory White. Funeral services for Mr. Cook will be Tuesday February 8, 2005 at 2:00pm at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Brian Wiles, Rev Gywn Anderson Rev Mark Freeman, and Rev. Jamie Wood and David Luffman. Burial will follow in Little Elkin Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 pm at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Little Elkin Baptist Church building fund, Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, Swan Creek Baptist Church, or Austin Baptist church building fund. The family would also like to express their appreciation to the staff of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the loving care that was given to Mr. Cook during his illness.
