Grace Hurt Davis

Mrs. Grace Hurt Davis, age 91 of Elkin, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Villages of Wilkes. Mrs. Davis was born May 31, 1920 in Surry County to William Virgil and Emma Edwards Hurt. After graduating from Elkin High School in 1936 she worked at J.C. Penney and later as a dental assistant. She married Harold Clifton Davis in 1948. Together she and her husband ran several businesses including North Elkin Television Service and Cliff's Car Wash. She was an Amateur Radio Operator, getting her license in the 1950's. She was a former president of the Elkin Garden Club and loved both vegetable and flower gardening. Sewing and needlework were also some of the things she loved to do, and she filled her home and those of her family with her creations. She learned to play the piano from her mother and she would play almost every night as long as she was able. She was a voracious reader who loved to read biographies and real life adventures. She often volunteered at the library, the hospital, and through her church, First United Methodist Church of Elkin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Harold Clifton Davis and three brothers, Clyde, Ovid, and Harold Hurt. Survivors include her daughter, Susan Davis of Winston-Salem; sons, Allen Davis and his wife Jeanie of Wilkesboro and Charles Davis and his wife Katherine of Fort Collins, CO; two grandchildren, Anthony Davis of Millers Creek and Andrea Triplett and her husband Matthew of Greensboro. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Dr. Chuck Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Elkin, PO Box 69, Elkin, NC 28621.
