State Road Mrs. Maretha Ball Carter, age 77, of Grassy Creek Drive passed away Monday morning, September 27, 2004 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Mrs. Carter was born June 11, 1927 in Surry County to Elmer Clyde & Rema Hudson Ball. Maretha was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. She was a faithful member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. A past president of the WMU, she worked tirelessly for missions. In the later years of her life, her passion was the church's tape ministry to the shut-ins and nursing home residents. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include: her husband of 56 years, Max Porter Carter of the home; two daughters, Delores Wong and husband Johnny of Gastonia, Nancy Andrews and husband Jeb of Hickory; three grandchildren, Emily Wong, Carter Wong and Mason Andrews; two sisters, Lucy Rash of Statesville and Betsy Mize of Lancaster, SC; a brother, Clyde Ball of Cochranton, Pa. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Elkin Valley Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. by Rev. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Clyde Ball. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church c/o missions. The family expresses sincere appreciation to Yadkin Valley Adult Medicine, Dr. Robert Peterson, Dr. Robert Tucker and Cancer Center Staff.
