Elkin Mrs. Sylvia Lawrence Durham, age 88, of Austin Traphill Road, currently residing at Surry Community Nursing Center went to her heavenly home, Monday, July 11, 2005. Mrs. Durham was born in Wilkes County on February 28, 1917 and she spent her formative years and received her education at Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville. Mrs. Durham was a retired beautician and was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray R. Lawrence; two sisters, Oma Norman and Marie Hartsog. Survivors include: her husband, Grover M. Durham of the home; a son, Michael Lawrence and wife Ann of Charlotte; two stepsons, Grover Dalon Durham, Wallace W. Durham and wife Dinah all of Roaring River; a daughter, Beverly Lawrence Mastin of Elkin; a sister, Stella Marshall of Flint, Mich.; four grandchildren, Kevin Lawrence, Avery Lawrence, David Mastin, Holly Watson; four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church by Rev. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Ivan Dameron. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Durham will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church or to the Baptist Children's Home of Thomasville.
