Elkin Rev. Joel Grant Johnson, age 82, of Hudson Street, passed away Monday, May 21, 2007 at Elkin Healthcare. Rev. Johnson was born April 2, 1925 in Wilkes County to Gaither & Meadie Harrold Johnson. Rev. Johnson was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. He was ordained in 1956 as a Baptist minister and served in several area churches for over 47 years and he was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII where he received several military honors including a Purple Heart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers. Survivors include: his wife, Chloe Holland Johnson of the home; two daughters, Pat Anthony and husband Clyde of Atlanta, Ga., Hilda Combs and husband Stan of Elkin; three brothers, Dewey Clay Johnson of Millers Creek, Lydle Johnson of Ronda, Jimmy Johnson of High Point; a sister, Lois McCauley of Powthaton, Va.; two grandchildren, Neal Anthony and Michelle Balachowski both of Atlanta, Ga.; one great granddaughter, Lily Caroline Anthony. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Richard Cardwell, Rev. John Holland and Rev. David Key. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 211 Cedarbrook Road, Jonesville, NC 28642.
