Elkin Mr. Mayhew Lonnie Swaim, age 85 of Cox Ave., Elkin passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Swaim was born November 12, 1922 in Surry County to Diamond Arthur & Mary Baker Swaim. Mr. Swaim was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. He was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church where he was a deacon and he enjoyed working with wood making clocks, cars and trucks, but his greatest love was his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harry Mayhew Swaim; two brothers, Harold Swaim and D.A. Swaim, Jr.; two sisters, Lucille Sprinkle and Helen Casey. Survivors include: his wife, Jackie Swaim of the home; a son, Barry Swaim and wife Lynda of Thurmond; a daughter, Vickie Pendergrass and husband John of Elkin; a sister, Frances Haynes of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Louise Swaim of Elkin; three grandchildren, Jenny Pendergrass, Harry Swaim and wife Susan, Richard Swaim and wife Desirre; four great grandchildren, Christian Swaim, Alexis Swaim, Ethan Swaim and Ashyr Whitwell. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 29, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church by Rev. Johnny Blevins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Swaim will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church, 118 N. Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621.
