State Road Woodrow Peace Lawrence, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Lawrence was born February 4, 1918 in Surry County to William Jesse & Catherine Shepherd Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII. Woodrow was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church and a member of Elkin Lions Club, Elkin Masonic Lodge 454 and Elkin VFW Post 7794. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Myers Lawrence; three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include: his wife, Wilma McCann Lawrence of the home; a son, Col. Robert Kirk Lawrence and wife Lisa of Germany; a step son, Eric McCann and wife Missy of Iowa; two daughters, Gay Lawrence Whitfield and husband Ashley of Lexington, Emilie Lawrence Simeon and husband Jim of Southern Pines; a step daughter, Julia Johnson and husband Tony of Dobson; a brother, Wade Lawrence and wife Eloise of Asheboro; three sisters, Ruth Wiseman of High Point and her daughter Anne, Louie Elks of High Point, Mary Craig and husband Richard of Pan Tego; seven grandchildren, Travis Whitfield, Britt Whitfield and wife Lisa, Kara Collins and husband David, J. Ross Simeon, Matt Simeon, Jake Lawrence, Adam Lawrence; five step grandchildren, Zachary, Joshua and Matthew Johnson, Joey and T.J. McCann; three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 13, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Rebecca Maynard. Burial will follow at Hollywood Cemetery with military honors provided by the VFW. Mr. Lawrence will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Northwest Regional Library, Elkin, NC 28621.
