Elkin Mrs. Rosan Hayes Smith, age 95, of Shoaly Branch Church Road, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Smith was born March 20, 1909 in Wilkes County to Brady & Alice Lassiter Hayes. Mrs. Smith was a member of Shoaly Branch Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Smith, Sr.; a son, George W. Smith, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Sarah "Peggy" Smith. Survivors include: five sons, Harvey Smith and wife Lorene, Franklin Smith and wife Lena, Eugene Smith and wife Annie Mae, David Smith and wife Wilma all of Elkin, Bill Smith and wife Johnsie of State Road; two daughters, Blanche McCann and husband Ray of Elkin, Mary "Maggie" Adams and husband Jim of Winston-Salem; twenty-two grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Shoaly Branch Baptist Church by Rev. Kenny Wood and Rev. Gordon Macemore. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin and following the funeral service Saturday at Shoaly Branch Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Shoaly Branch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Woodrow Faulk, her long-time medical doctor; to Mrs. Decca Hanes and Mrs. Joyce McGrady, her home caregivers, also to the staff of Hugh Chatham Hospital 2nd floor nursing unit for their concern and kindness. With her passing so ends her generation.
