Zelma Fay Key Newman, 89, of Elkin passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1920 in Wilkes County to Robert and Bessie Terrell Key. Mrs. Newman was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a very talented seamstress and quilter. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Avery "Ted" Newman; brother, Oscar Key; sisters, Hazel Key Sale & Hattie B. Key Renegar; and brother, Claude E. Key. She is survived by a son, Gary Newman & wife Karen of Millers Creek; a daughter, Judy Newman of Decatur, Georgia; two grandchildren, Melissa Johnson & husband Brandon, and Brad Newman; and one great-grandchild, Owen Johnson. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 11:00 am in Elkin Funeral Service Chapel by Rev. Danny Dodds. Burial will follow in Little Elkin Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 593 Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, NC 28621 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Elkin Funeral Service is serving the Newman family.
