Clyde Myers Powers

Elkin Mrs. Eugene W. Clyde M. Powers, 243 Dutchman Creek Road, passed away on February 22, 2009 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Carl Clinton Myers, born September 16, 1923 in Surry County. She was married to Mr. Eugene Wesley Powers, June 17, 1942. He preceded her in death October 4, 2001. Mrs. Powers is survived by two devoted children, a son, James Wesley Powers and wife Jane Caton Powers, of Morganton; a daughter, Amy Elizabeth Powers and husband, Frank Stamper of Cornelius. She leaves three dear grandchildren, James Wesley Powers, II of Morganton, Thomas Nathan Powers and wife Gina Carriker Powers of Hickory, Susan Jane Powers Holder and husband Timothy Wayne Holder of Denver, NC; also great grandchildren, Clint Thomas Powers of Hickory, Anna Caroline Holder of Denver, NC, Graham Randolph Powers of Hickory. Also surviving, sister, Mrs. John W. Madeline Share, Jr.; brother-in-law, John W. Shore, Jr. of Boonville; sister-in-law, Mrs. Joe G. Katherine Myers of Statesville; aunt, Mrs. Ray Bonnie Haviland of Jackson, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Jessie L. Powers, Jr. and wife Bea of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law, Kathryn S. Powers of Elkin; several cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Clyde was preceded in death by two brothers, William C. Myers of Elkin and Joe G. Myers of Statesville; sister-in-law, Maxine Cheatwood Myers of Elkin. Mrs. Powers spent most of her life in Elkin, graduated from Elkin High School class of 1941, and attended Women's College, University of North Carolina where she was a member of its Aletheian Society. She was a lifelong member of Elkin First Baptist Church, a dedicated and active member in her former years, choir member, Woman's Missionary Union, circle leader, youth choir helper, Sunday school teacher, leader of G.A.'s, Sunbeams, Y.W.A. groups, properties and flower committees, and Feed the Elderly program. Clyde took an active roll in the civic affair, having been a Girl Scout in her youth she was a strong support of its Scouting program where she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of Elkin Junior Woman's Club, served as president 1955 and 1956, was awarded Woman of the year 1951-1952, and the degree of Master Junior Clubwoman 1958. Clyde was active in Surry County Red Cross Blood Mobile program in Elkin. She was a charter and active member of Hugh Chatham Hospital Auxiliary, lifelong member of Auxiliary Board, serving in numerous capacities and office, served as president of the Auxiliary two years, Trustee on Hospital Board when the Hospital was instrumental in planning Parkwood Retirement Home in Elkin. A charter member of Elkin Advisory Committee of Winston-Salem Foundation. Her family hosted an America Field Service Student from Tokyo, Japan, Yuki Uchimura for a year study at Elkin High School in 1969. She served as Chapter President of A.F.S. in Elkin; helped form Elkin's first Art Council, a supporter of the Elkin Library program, served on the board, also on Elkin Town Beutification board. She was a charter member of Elkin Garden Club, study club, and bridge club, which she enjoyed. Her delight was extensive traveling; for many years she and Eugene spent in these pursuits. Always interested, a supporter, and active in civic, cultural, and religious activities in Elkin; she gave with dignity and devotion to the service of others, and to the welfare of Elkin. A graveside service for family and friends will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at Elkin First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Rebecca Maynard officiating. Family will receive friends after the memorial service in the fellowship hall.
