Dallas Reece Shugart

Jonesville Mr. Dallas Reece Shugart, age 83, of Ridge Street, Jonesville, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mr. Shugart was born July 23, 1923 in Jonesville to Dallas H. & Clyde Reece Shugart. He lived in Winston-Salem until he was 11 years of age then moved to Jonesville and attended Jonesville School until he graduated in 1940. Mr. Shugart played basketball and baseball at Jonesville High School and football at Elkin High School. Mr. Shugart was a veteran of the United States Navy where he volunteered for the Navy V5 flight program and attended the University of South Carolina, University of Georgia and Auburn University and trained at Pensacola, Fla. He was a gunnery instructor at Portland Maine base. Dallas entered Appalachian State University in 1946 and graduated in 1948, while he was there, he played football, basketball and baseball. He taught and coached at Griffith High School in Winston-Salem from 1948-1952 and was the Assistant Principal from 1952-1954. Mr. Shugart was the Principal at Glenn High School in Winston-Salem from 1954-1961 and the Principal at Jonesville School from 1961-1984 where he retired. Dallas was a member of Jonesville First United Methodist Church and he was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: his wife of 62 years, Mary Kate Woodhouse Shugart of the home; two sons, Dallas Reece Shugart, Jr. and wife Lucia of Alta Loma, CA, Jim Shugart and wife Jane of Houston, TX; a daughter, Katherine Hartman and husband Tony of Winston-Salem; a sister, Doris Norman of Boonville; four grandchildren, Paige Shugart, Dallas Reece Shugart, III, Francesca Shugart and Mary Katherine Hartman; three nephews, Frank Boles and Les Boles, David Norman; two nieces, Donna Norman and Saunders Thompson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Jonesville First United Methodist Church by Rev. Jim Sanders. Burial will follow at Sunrise Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030; or to Jonesville First United Methodist Church 311 West Main Street, Jonesville, NC 28642.
