Hodges Funeral Home Elkin, NC 336-526-4460 Elkin, Mrs. Katherine Jones Amburn, 94, of Johnson Ridge Road, passed away Sunday May 20, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Amburn was born December 24, 1912 in Elk Creek, VA to Hillery Franklin Jones, Jr. and Ollie Clyde Delp Jones. Mrs. Amburn lived in Sparta until 1920 when she moved to Elkin. She attended Elkin School system and graduated from Mitchell College Academy in Statesville. She received her RN degree from St. Vincent de Paul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, VA and returned to work at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mrs. Amburn was a member of Elkin First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a member of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and served as local Red Cross Bloodmobile coordinator. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Amburn, Sr., her step-father, W. Grady Lyerly, a brother, H. Frank Jones III. Survivors include: A son and daughter-in-law, James F. Amburn, Jr. and wife Connie of Sparta. A special grand-dog, Arnie. A host of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Thursday May 24, 2007 at 10:30 am at Hollywood Cemetery by Dr. Chuck Baker, Jr. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at Elkin First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the Church parlor. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial be made to Tri-C Health Resource Center PO Box 69 Elkin, NC 28621 or to Mountain Valley Hospice 107 Court Street Elkin, NC 28621.
