Freda Draughn Nixon

December 18, 1915 — November 29, 2009

Freda Nixon, our loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Nixon was born December 18, 1915 in Surry County to George Washington & Margie Mae Wolfe Draughn. She worked side by side with her husband Charlie, in his auto garage and could rebuild a car motor just as good as he could. She will be remembered for her love of her church, of which she was a lifetime member, her undying faith in the Lord, her unceasing love for her family, and her daily handwritten notes to family and friends. She will also be remembered for her crafts, for her love of all creatures great and small, her kindness to others, her delicious pies, cakes, and chicken & dumplings, and learning to drive a car when she was sixty. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nixon was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Nixon; a sister, Hazel Morrison; and a brother, Kent Draughn. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Hayes & husband Clyde of Elkin and Clara Coffey, also of Elkin; one sister, Janice Wallace of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Cathy Grissom & husband Richard, Olivia Delacruz & husband Fredy, Brian Ratledge, Jeff Hayes & wife Sandra, and Lynn Hayes; eight great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 10:30 am in Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am in the church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Christian Life Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 118 North Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621, or to Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621. The family wishes to thank the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center and the staff on the third floor of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital for their caring acts of kindness to our mother.
