State Road Mrs. Lula Viola Smith, age 95 of Couch Fish Lake Road, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born March 10, 1912 in Wilkes County to William David & Samantha Jane Tucker Laster. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ralph Smith; a son, Ralph Junior Smith; two brothers, Roby Laster, Ernest Laster; a sister, Nevada Teague. Survivors include: two sons, Robert S. Smith and wife Diann of Elkin, Curtis C. Smith of Flint, Mich.; two daughters, Joyce Martell Partin and husband Charles of Rialto, California, Brenda Smith Simpson and husband Junior of State Road; fourteen grandchildren, Sam Smith, Rodney Smith, Jason Smith, Roger Bryan Smith, Randy Smith, James Smith, Curtis Jr. Smith, Lorie Minzey, Robert Clemens, Sandy Wall, Lenita Martin, Kevin Hall, Ricky Smith, David Smith; one step grandchild, Lisa Long; seventeen great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Dan Merritt and Rev. Vernon Ball. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Smith will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
