State Road Mrs. Mabel Dobbins Southard, age 83, of West Forest Drive, State Road, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2004 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Southard was born May 4, 1921 in Surry County to Cleve & Sally Lane Dobbins. Mrs. Southard was a very active member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was currently employed part-time by Dollar Tree. Survivors include: a daughter, Sarah S. Benoist and special friend Alan Fowler of Bessimer City; two grandchildren, Jerry Benoist, Doug Benoist and wife Lindsey all of Gastonia; one great granddaughter, Lauren Benoist of Gastonia. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by Rev. John Attaway. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Southard family.
