State Road Mr. Fredrick Samuel Burcham, age 88, of Old Hwy. 21 passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Burcham was born December 21, 1919 in Wilkes County to Fred Devon & Grace Poplin Burcham. Mr. Burcham was a veteran of the United States Army where he served during World War II and retired from Chatham Manufacturing with 47 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in State Road where he held several leadership positions in the church which include, Choir Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director, Assistant Teacher and Sports Recreation Director. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 55 years, Amalie Holbrook Burcham. Survivors include his wife, Betty Hanes Burcham of the home; a son, William Randolph Burcham of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Carol B. Combs of Lake Wales, Fla., Janet B. Welsh of Longwood, Fla.; three sisters, Grace Tulbert of Sparta, Alma Plogger of Martinsville, Va., Frances Lattimore of Lawndale, NC; four grandchildren, Barbara Miller of Delray Beach, Fla., Mark Combs of Orlando, Fla., Carole Carver of Aiken, SC; Eric Welsh of St. Louis, Mo.; three great grandchildren, Freya Miller, Kayla Combs and Sarah Combs. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by Rev. John Attaway. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
