Mrs. Mamie Poteat Darnell, 79 of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Darnell was born June 26, 1930 in Surry County to Jim and Lillie Mickel Poteat. She attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a member of the Red Hat Society and Golden Girls. Mrs. Darnell loved antiques, enjoyed doll collecting, and was an avid Elvis Presley fan. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Darnell was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Poteat, Ralph Poteat, and Jimmy Poteat. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herman Clarence Darnell of the home; a daughter Karen Darnell Holloway; two brothers, Earl Poteat and wife Becky and Ernest Poteat and wife Carolyn; two sisters, Mildred Lyon and Anna Lou Bowers and husband Robert; four grandchildren, Brad White and wife Brooke, Allison Gail White, Brian Holloway and wife Tina, and Lisa Holloway Freeman; six great grandchildren, Bethany Myers, Lindsey Stone, Austin Holloway, Laura Holloway, Kendall Freeman, and Sable Freeman; special friends, Lovie Phillips and Cassa Smith. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Dodds, Rev. Gary Byrd, and Dr. Bill Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Elkin Funeral Service.
