Donald A. Anderson

May 3, 1918 — January 1, 2008

Jonesville Mr. Donald A. Anderson, age 89, of Hwy. 67, Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at his home. He was born in Wilkes County, May 3, 1918 to William Edward and Roxie Nance Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a veteran of the US Army and a retired auto body repairman and businessman. He served and gave much to the country he loved. He entered into service in the Civilian Conservation Corp, as a teenager where he served in Surry and Stokes Counties, and when that term expired he volunteered in the United States Army in September 1940, serving in British Guyana and when the US entered WWII, he volunteered for overseas duty. There he served on the front lines in Italy as a combat infantry man. He fought in the Campaigns of 1944 known as Rome-Arno and the Northern Apennines. History reflects that those campaigns of the Italian theatre of war had some of the hardest fought battles and the worst conditions endured by the soldiers of the allied forces ever. He was awarded the Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medals, the American Theatre Ribbon and six overseas service bars. He received an honorable discharge in October 1945. He always showed great patriotism for his country and support for the people in the armed services. Just a few days ago, while fighting a battle with the illness that took him from us, he was proudly sending his highest regards to the soldiers now fighting overseas, by the way of a Christmas phone call from his Grandson now serving the US Army in Iraq. We have lost another member of the "Greatest Generation". A good soldier having fought a good fight has gone to meet his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Harold Anderson and a daughter-in-law, Lynda Carter Anderson; a sister, Stella Anderson Hodge; brothers, Sherman Anderson and Mack Anderson. Survivors include: two daughters, Carolyn Anderson Hall and husband Wayne of State Road, Judy Anderson Smith and husband James of Jonesville; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Pyrtle and husband Greg, Shannon Street and husband Nathan, Jessica Smith, Bethany Smith, Anthony Anderson, Kayla Anderson and Crystal Anderson; and two great grandchildren; a beloved friend and companion Biddie Bryant of Jonesville; three great grandchildren, Kayci Shaw, Avery Pyrtle and Hunter Anderson; brothers, Bill Anderson of Elkin, Rev. Edward Anderson, Jr. of Asheboro; four sisters, Ruby Harker of Jonesville, Ann Woodruff of Elkin, Lorene Thompson of Mooresville, Lena Simendinger of Jonesville.
