Elkin Mr. Kenneth Bolen Spicer, age 94, of Pinecrest Drive, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Wilkes Senior Village. Mr. Spicer was born May 13, 1914 in Grayson County, VA to Joseph and Daisey Harris Spicer. Mr. Spicer was retired from the United States Army after 30 years of service where he earned the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After his retirement, he worked for IBM as a computer specialist. He was a member of Antioch Methodist Church and was a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church Conference. Kenneth had a lifelong involvement in the Boy Scouts of America where he served as Council Committee Member of the Old Hickory Council Troop #658; he was also a member of the Vigil Order of the Arrow, Foothills Arts Council and Surry County Literary Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rubin "Burr" Spicer, a sister, Faye Spicer Vermeulen, and a special nephew, William "Bill" Vermeulen. Survivors include: a sister, Ruth Spicer Newman of Elkin; special niece, Mary Newman Ashley and husband Billy of Elkin; special nephew, Michael Newman and wife Judy of State Road; a great niece, JoAnn Vermeulen of Advance; a great nephew, Mark Edwards and wife Crystal of Sylva, NC; a great niece, Jill Newman; a great-great nephew, Anthony Edwards; a step great niece, Wendy Childress of Hillsville, VA; two step Great Nephews Dennis Childress and wife Tonya of Thurmond, Grey Childress of Goldsboro; step great niece, Beth Foster and family. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, that family asks that memorials be made to Surry County Literary Society or to the Camp Raven Knob. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Spicer Family.
