Elkin Mr. James Olin "J.O." Poindexter, age 80, of Elk Spur Street, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Poindexter was born July 26, 1924 in Surry County to Jesse Emery & Georgia Wall Poindexter. Mr. Poindexter was retired after 45 years of service from Merita Bakery and was a very active member of West Elkin Baptist Church where he was a deacon and choir member. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Garfield, Howard, Alvin and Albert Poindexter. Survivors include: his wife, Avanell "Nell" Poindexter of the home; two daughters, Scarlet P. Lyons and husband Rocky, Michelle P. Wagoner and husband Greg all of Elkin; three grandchildren, C.J. Lyons, Austin Lyons and Courtney Wagoner; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 8, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at West Elkin Baptist Church by Rev. Dwayne Byrd and Rev. Danny Poindexter. Mr. Poindexter will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
