Avery Norman Watson

Mr. Avery Norman Watson, age 85, passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 in Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 28, 1924 in Surry County to Ambrose P. and Kate Mills Watson. Mr. Watson retired from Central Telephone Company in 1982 after 31 years of service. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the 389th AAA division in the south Pacific. Mr. Watson was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin where he served on the church council and was president and leader of Triple A Group. He was a member of the Elkin rescue squad for 22 years where he served as past president and president of the Surry County Rescue Association. Mr. Watson was a past member of the Elkin Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, and Toastmaster Club. He also served as a town commissioner and on the Surry County planning board and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby J. Watson, brothers Lucian Watson, Earl Watson, Vance Watson, and Dewey Watson, and sister Eacer Love. Survivors include: wife Ann Bolen Watson of the home, son Avery Norman Watson, Jr. and wife Glenda of Mooresville, daughter Donna Anderson and husband Randy of Jonesville, step son Michael W. Bolen and wife Shay of Woodlawn, Va. grandchildren Wendy Griffith and husband Rod of Denver, Brian Watson of Mooresville, Brooke Anderson of Jonesville, Todd Bolen and wife Anne of Alexandria, VA., Dustin Bolen and wife Amanda of Radford, Va., four great grandchildren Hannah Griffith, Zoey Blevins, Katherine Bolen, and Mina Bolen. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 24, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in First Baptist Church of Elkin with Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Rebecca Maynard officiating. The burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery in Mt. Airy with full military honors provided by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 Mt. Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Elkin, 110 Gwyn Ave, Elkin, NC 28621 or Elkin Rescue Squad, 940 N. Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621.
