Elkin Mr. Lewis Fleet Mathis, age 96, of Victoria St., Elkin was called Home to be with our Lord at 2:15 am Sunday morning, April 22, 2007 after a brief illness. He was born March 6, 1911 in Iredell County to D. C. and Jurella Lunsford Mathis. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers: Graham, Snow Camp; Rex, Winston-Salem; Troy, Alexandria, VA; Guy, Elkin; Hal, Winston-Salem; Joe, San Francisco, CA. Mr. Mathis graduated from Rural Hall High School and retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. where he worked in Accounting and Purchasing. After retiring, he earned his Realtor license and worked in real estate for a few years. He helped organize Elkin's Little League Baseball program where he coached for several years. He was an avid golfer, active in the Republican Party and Elkin Masonic Lodge where he was a Master Mason and Past Master. Mr. Mathis loved his Lord, his family and his church. Until recent years, he was an active member of First Baptist Church of Elkin where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and deacon. Survivors include: his wife of 68 years, Hazel Jarvis Mathis and four children: Sara Carter Stony of Elkin; John Luann Mathis of Elkin; Sally Hutchens of Winston-Salem and Davis Diane Mathis of Elkin, three grandchildren and three great-grand children. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Rebecca Maynard. Burial with full Masonic Rites will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baptist Children's Homes of NC. or to Ebenezer Gardens Christian Children's Nome of North Wilkesboro. Hodges Funeral Home is serving the Mathis family.
