Thurmond Mr. Paul Ernest Butcher, age 81, of US Hwy. 21, Thurmond, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2007. Mr. Butcher was born July 26, 1925 in Surry County to Troy & Ida Gilly Butcher. Mr. Butcher was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII, and received numerous medals of which include, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Service Star, Campaign "Central Europe", EAMET Ribbon, Bronze Service Star Campaign "Rhineland" and a Purple Heart. He retired from Colonial Trucking Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Elbert, Edward, Irvin and Ralph; a sister, Attis Anthony. Survivors include: his wife, Helen Butcher of State Road; a son, Danny Butcher and wife Bonnie of Traphill; a daughter, Shirley Ladd of the home; a sister, Fairy Zach of Jonesville; four grandchildren, Toby Butcher and wife Cyndi of Jonesville; Travis Butcher of Traphill; Matthew Poplin and wife Lynn of State Road; Monica Hinshaw and husband Charles of Roaring River; five great grandchildren, Jonathan Matthew Poplin, Elizabeth Poplin, Brady Anderson, Jackson Hinshaw and Allen Daniel Butcher. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Little Stone Mountain Baptist Church by Rev. Walter Hutchinson and Rev. Ronnie Houser. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
