James Engle Mcculloch

Elkin Mr. James Engle McCulloch, age 75, formerly of Tahoe Drive, Durham, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mr. McCulloch was born November 16, 1933 in Lancaster, Penn. to Norman Bowman & Elizabeth Engle McCulloch. Jim grew up in Raleigh, NC. A graduate of Broughton High School and the University of North Carolina, Jim was also a veteran of the US Army. Jim had a long and storied career in audio engineering, beginning with his work on The Lost Colony productions while Andy Griffith was a cast member. He got his first taste of audio engineering for television when, while a student at UNC Chapel Hill, he began working with C.D. Chesley on television broadcast of ACC basketball games. Jim continued his career working for public television in Maryland, where he worked at the Watergate Hearings and with the popular children's television show, Romper Room. Of all the work he did, Jim most enjoyed his work in the sports television, both for major networks as well as for professional sports broadcasting corporations such as Raycom/Jefferson Pilot. Jim earned an Emmy for his work on the 1988 Seoul Olympics. An amateur radio fan and a longtime member of the Parkwood Volunteer Fire Department, Jim retired from the Department of Radio, Television and Motion Pictures at the University of North Carolina. Survivors include: his wife, Eleanor Teschler McCulloch of the home; two sons, Jeffrey N. McCulloch and wife Adelaide of Wilmington, Joseph E. McCulloch and wife Cicely of Elkin; a brother, Norman "Sandy" McCulloch of Oregon; two grandchildren, Diana McCulloch and Coley McCulloch. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Brian Rummage. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Alzheimer's Association Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220 or to Parkwood Volunteer Fire Department, 1409 Seaton Road, Durham, NC 27713?
