William David Tharpe

Ronda Mr. William David Tharpe, age 82, of South Lomax Road, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Tharpe was born May 16, 1923 in Wilkes County to William Freeeland & Bretta Poplin Tharpe. Mr. Tharpe was retired from Ronda Chair Factory and the NC School Board and he was a farmer. Mr. Tharpe was a veteran of the US Army and served during WWII and was a member of Old Hickory Association 30th infantry division. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Purple Heart Association Chapter 638. He was also on the Board of Directors of Ronda Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Tharpe Wingler; a sister, Lorene Tabor and a brother, Loten Tharpe. Survivors include: his wife, Annie Lee Hollowy Tharpe of the home; a daughter, Vivian Tharpe Settle and husband Harley of Roaring Gap; three brothers, Sam Tharpe of Pilesville, MD, S.D. Tharpe of N. Wilkesboro, Felix Tharpe of Elkin; four sisters, Margaret Poplin of Ronda, Nancy Guiton of Jamestown, Bretta Mae Hayes of Wilkesboro; Helen Porter of Ronda; two grandchildren, David Settle and wife Diane Baker, Amanda Settle and husband Jon; four great grandchildren, Courtney, Trinity, Colton and Tucker Settle. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 28, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church by Rev. Joel Blevins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. Mr. Tharpe will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church.
