Mr. William "Bill" Paul Smith, Jr., age 84 of Elkin, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011. Mr. Smith was born March 1, 1927 in Surry County to William Paul and Pearl Isaacs Smith, Sr. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and attended the Church of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a past fire chief with Pleasant Hill Fire Department and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was present at the attack on Pearl Harbor. During his time in the U.S. Navy he served on the USS Langley. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Bryant; sister, Mary Lois Mahaffey; and brother, Jack Smith. Survivors include his wife Doris Ann Smith of the home; son, Tim Smith and his wife Carmen of Dobson; step son, Mike Johnson and his wife Ronda of Jacksonville, AK., step daughter, Karen Mook and her husband Jimmy of State Road; sister-in-law, Janet Sawyers of Elkin; grandchildren, Landon Smith, Jason Tedder, Sloan Bryant; step grandchildren, Megan Gage and her husband Justin, Michaela Mook, Jordan Johnson, Rebekah Johnson, Brianna Johnson, Mandy Johnson, and Jessica Holler; adopted grandchildren, Rodney Thomas and Brent Thomas; great grandchildren, Dailon Smith, Kayden Gage, Tyler Gage, Alyssa Gage; step-great grandchildren, Nicholas Holler and Dillon Holler. Many loving nieces, nephews and friends. His two dogs, Tinker Belle and Boss. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 9, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Elkin Valley Baptist Church Rev. Johnny Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors provided by Yadkin County VFW post 10346. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8pm at Elkin Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to Yadkin County VFW post 10346 or to Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
