Hammett Nolden Riner

Elkin Rev. Hammett Nolden Riner, Jr. age 83 of Johnson Ridge Road passed away Sunday November 12, 2006 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. On October 5, 1923 God presented to Hammett Nolden and Della Thomas Riner, Sr. a son Hammett "Ham", born a twin in Richmond Virgina. Hammett was a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church in Elkin and retired from the ministry with his last church being the First Baptist Church of Dobson, North Carolina. While in Dobson he taught New Testament Religion at Surry County Community College. Hammett graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, he served in the US Army during WWII .and upon his return, he attended Mars Hill College where he felt the Lord calling him to full time ministry work. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond and continued onto Southeastern Seminary. Hammett served as minister of churches throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Being a faithful servant to God he devoted many years of outreach to others. Through the years "Ham" enjoyed working on his 200 year old log home with his wife Florence where they lived in retirement. He found pleasure in woodworking, gardening and oil painting. He treasured life and had a great sense of humor. He gave freely of his resources to others and was an encourager to many. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Florence Hayes Riner; he is survived by his daughters Sharon Fritter and her husband David of Mechanicsville Va, and Tressie Ellis and her husband Mark of Martinsville Va.; three grandchildren, Emily Fritter, Ben Fritter, and Scott Ellis; two sisters, his twin sister Helen Scott and Gloria Harrison and her husband Richard all of Richmond Va. and his brother Frasia Riner and his wife Mable also of Richmond Va. His family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the entire staff at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the loving care he received over the last year. A thank you is extended for the excellent care and comfort the nurses in the special care units on the second floor of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital provided. The acts of kindness from his church family and friends will always be remembered by his family. Flowers will be accepted and memorial contributions may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church Building Fund, C/o Jim DeBord, 118 North Elkin Dr. Elkin Nc 28621 Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00pm Tuesday November 14, 2006 at Elkin Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in the Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.
