William George Carter

State Road William "Bill" George Carter, age 77, of Oak Hill Drive, passed away Sunday February 5, 2006 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center after an extended battle with Alzheimer's. Mr. Carter was born November 24, 1928 in Brighton, Colorado to William C. and Helen Pilkinton Carter. Mr. Carter retired from the United States Air Force. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Presnell Carter and two brothers, John Carter and Lee Carter. Survivors include, his wife, Phyllis Maines Carter of the home. Two sons and daughter in law, Randy Carter and his wife Margie of Elkin, Terrence Carter of Angier, NC. Two Stepsons and daughter in law, Dean Gilliam and wife Mary Ellen of East Bend, Darren Gilliam of Greensboro. Two step daughters and sons in law, Diane Gilliam Webb and husband Tim of Boonville, Denise Kemrey and husband Kevin of Roaring Gap. A sister, Helen Fenner and husband Keith of Green Valley, Arizona. Four Grandchildren, three great grandchildren, five step grandchildren. A graveside service with full Military Rites will be held Tuesday February 7, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Crestwood Memorial Gardens by Rev. John Attaway. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 pm at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center Activities Department. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center for the loving care that was given to Mr. Carter over the past several years.
