Mrs. Dessiree Rubie Carter Darnell, age 91, formerly of 120 East Robin Road, passed away June 4, 2011 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Darnell was born June 3, 1920 in Wilkes County to Willie Harrison and Laura Pettyjohn Carter. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who placed great value on God, family and home. Mrs. Darnell was a former Chatham Manufacturing employee and worked in the retail in Elkin for many years. She was a devoted member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church until she had declining health. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Barker Darnell, a son, Kenneth Edward Darnell, four brothers, James Carter, Watson Carter, Dewitt Carter and Floyd Carter, four sisters, Ethel Money, Dora Wall, Lizzie Collins and Tessie Wishon. Mrs. Darnell is survived by a daughter, Cathie Bradshaw and husband Dave of Rural Hall, three grandchildren, Josh Williams of New York City, Clint Williams of McAllen, Texas, LaDonna Willis of Milledgeville, GA., three step-grandchildren, Chris Bradshaw and wife Liz of King, Shaw Lentz of Chapel Hill, Margaret Wells and husband Bill of Columbus, OH, four great grandchildren, Caleb Williams of Winston Salem, Alex Bradshaw of King, Kenny Bass, and Shannon Willis both of Milledgeville, GA. A graveside service will be held Thursday June 9, 2011 at Crestwood Memorial Gardens at 6:30 pm conducted by Rev. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Justin Blakley. The family will receive friends from 5 until 6 pm at Elkin Funeral Service prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made in memory of Dessiree to Elkin Valley Baptist Church 118 North Elkin Drive Elkin, NC 28621. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center, especially the Alzheimer½s Unit staff for the excellent care that was provided for many years.
