Mr. Carl Alexander Upright, Sr., age 70 of Shoaly Branch Church Road, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Upright was born February 5, 1935 in Iredell County to James A. & Sarah Lucille Sipes Upright. Mr. Upright was a retired engineering inspector for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He was a member of Shoaly Branch Baptist Church where here he served in several positions including, deacon, Sunday school director, church treasurer, choir director, church secretary and Sunday school teacher. He was an active Scout Master for Troop 656 Little Mountain Grange where he received many honors including the Good Shepherd award which is the highest ranking in Boy Scouts. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include: His wife, Frances Swaim Upright of the home; two sons, Billy Upright and wife Anita, Joey Upright all of Elkin; two daughters, Debbie Myers and husband Allen, Karen Spicer and husband James all of Elkin, two brothers, Sam Upright and Charlie Upright both of Troutman, a sister, Mary Holton of Harmony, three grandchildren, James Myers, John Myers and Kendra Upright all of Elkin; four great grandchildren, Makayla Myers, John Anakin Myers, Destiny Myers and William Myers. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Shoaly Branch Baptist Church by Rev. Kenny Wood. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 656, Grange Road, Elkin or to Shoaly Branch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
