Elkin Mr. Edward Ralston "Ral" Long, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday morning Jan. 7, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mr. Long was born Jan. 7, 1926 in the Salem Fork Community to John Alexander and Esther Haymore Long. He had lived in the Elkin area for his entire life with the exception of his service with the US Army in Europe during WWII. He was a long time member and former deacon of Jonesville First Baptist Church. Mr. Long was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. Mr. Long is survived by his daughter Susan Nielsen Tom, grandchildren Thomas Edward " Ned" Nielsen and Cashen Ann Nielsen of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters Delia Lanners Tom of Morganton, June Trivette Charles of Hickory and Madeline Long of Charlotte. Also surviving are sisters in law Gertrude Long of Mt. Airy, Rachel Long of Dobson, Shirley McCoin George of Elkin, Melba Lauver Hank of Garner and Betty Caudle of Elkin. He was preceded in death by his wife Jackie Caudle Long, brothers Winfred, Mac, and Joe Long and Sisters Nell Jones Carlton and Ruth Long. The family will receive friends from 5-8p Tuesday Jan. 9 at Hodges Funeral Home Highway 268 West in Elkin. A graveside service will be held at 11am Wednesday January 10 in Hollywood Cemetery North Bridge St., Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Jonesville First Baptist Church or Salem Fork Christian Church, Dobson, NC.
