Alan L. Payne

Mr. Alan L. Payne, age 94, of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.

Alan was born on September 16, 1929, in Forsyth County to Ancus L. and Eunice Flynt Payne. He graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Alan retired from Chatham Manufacturing Company in Elkin, where he served as Chairman and president. He served many years on the Board of Trustees of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in many capacities, including that of Chairman. He was a past president of the North Carolina Textile Manufacturers Association, and he served on the executive committee and as director of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. He also served as a Director of the North Carolina Textile Foundation. Alan was a past Director and member of the Executive Committee of North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Billie Payne. Alan is also survived by two sons, Jeff of Raleigh, N.C., and Flynt of Maui, Hawaii.

A private graveside service will be held in Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin. The family requests that any memorials be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
