Betty Jean Charles

Betty Jean Charles, age 96, passed away Monday, September 23, 2024, at her residence in Elkin.

Betty was born July 21, 1928, in Catawba County to Robert Lee and Mildred Wilfong Clemmer. She was a member of Elkin First United Methodist Church and was the first teaching assistant at Elkin City Schools.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Charles, Sr.; sisters Dotty McCord and Mickey Shuford; and a son-in-law, Roger Scott.

Survivors include sons John H. Charles Jr. and wife Becky and Stephen Michael Charles; daughters Ann Charles Scott, Cathy Charles Sidden and husband John, and Carol Charles Steadman and husband Ned; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and a special neighbor, Paula Rice.

All services will be held privately, in accordance with Betty's wishes, respecting her desire for a quiet and intimate farewell.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Mountain Valley Hospice, 968 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice, particularly Ramona Pardue and Melinda Cockerham, for their exceptional care and unwavering support during Betty's final days.
