Chesley Guy Brinegar

Mr. Chesley Guy Brinegar, 85, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation. Chesley was born November 17, 1937, in Wilkes County to Guy Brinegar and Eula Walker Brinegar.

Despite complete deafness, he graduated from Elkin High School in 1956 and worked for Hunter Publishing Company (Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel) in Winston-Salem for 25 years until retirement. For many years, he taught Sunday School and drove the church bus for the deaf ministry at Woodland Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

He was an avid outdoorsman and took his son’s trout fishing and hunting all throughout the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. Later he took up nature photography. He loved NASCAR racing as well.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Katie Collins Brinegar (EHS ’62), and sisters, Eva Brinegar Dameron (EHS ’50), Mabel Brinegar Fowler, (EHS ’53), and Rita Brinegar Mounce. (EHS ’61)

Survivors include his wife, Colleen McKinney Brinegar, of the home; son, Dr. Richard Brinegar, and his wife, Ava of Elkin, Stephen Brinegar and his wife, Farrah of Clemmons; step-daughters; Debra Wilberger of Va, Donna Hall of Ga, Teresa Edwards of Fla.; brothers; Walter Brinegar (EHS ‘57 ) and his wife Jeanette of Granite Quarry, Ted Brinegar (EHS ‘59) and his wife Eloise of Lewisville; brother-in-law: Beauford Fowler of Winston-Salem; grandchildren; Joshua Brinegar (EHS ’13), Daniel Brinegar (EHS ’15), Paul Brinegar (EHS ‘23) and Nathan Brinegar.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at 1:00 p.m., at Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Stephen Robbins and Dr. Richard Brinegar officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at the Elkin Valley Baptist Church Christian Life Center.
