Mrs. Doris C. Petersham, age 86, passed away Friday, October 1, 2021 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born June 14, 1935 in Ravenna, Ohio to Warner and Ethel Curry Cunningham.
Mrs. Petersham received her M.F.A from Kent State University. She began her career in the arts as the owner and teacher of a Craft School in Missoula, Montana. Later she worked for many years for C.A.R.E and the United Nations working in Fiji, Haiti and Africa teaching textile design. After moving to Elkin, Mrs. Petersham, returned to her first love of making pottery. She was known for making pieces of pottery that were beautiful as well as functional and practical. Mrs. Petersham was active with the Foothills Arts Council in the Clay Works Program. She was an avid gardener and gourmet cook and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Miska F. Petersham; son, Kurt Andrie and brother, Donald Cunningham.
Survivors include: daughter, Leigh A. Freeman of Elkin, granddaughter, Nicole M. Freeman and step grandchildren, William Freeman and Hannah Freeman.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
