Dorothy Hayes

Today heaven gained a very special angel! On Monday, March 7, 2022, Mrs. Dorothy Irene Cockerham Hayes, age 96, of Mountain Park was called home to be with her Lord and Savior. Mrs. Hayes was born in Surry County on October 24, 1925 to Dollie Cockerham and Florence Shores Cockerham.

Mrs. Hayes was a member of Mountain Park Baptist Church from the age of 12 and attended faithfully until her health declined. She was a fervent prayer warrior to the very end and loved her huge family, church, and friends with all her heart. Her legacy, aside from her family, is the love she has shown and all the lives she has touched over her 96 years on this earth.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, O’Brien D. Hayes, Sr.; son, O’Brien D. Hayes, Jr.; sister, Pauline Bargoil; sister-in-law, Grace Cockerham; and granddaughter, Amber Love.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Bonnie Tucker and her husband Larry of Mt. Airy and Mariam Brooks and her husband Shawn of Poplar Springs; daughter-in-law, Susanne Hayes of Soddy Daisy, TN; one brother, D.C. Cockerham of Newton; five loving grandchildren, Larry Tucker and his wife Julie of Climax, Donna Kilgore and her husband Jeff of Dunlap, TN. Richard Love of Jonesville, Dorothy Bragg and her husband Thomas of Moravian Falls, and Jeff Brooks of State Road. She is also survived by many much loved and cherished great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as, many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Tim Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special thank you to her extended family at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation who showed her love and compassion in her last years.
