Ellen Hillyer

Ellen Redfern Hillyer, a longtime resident of State Road passed away on August 1, 2021 at the age of 70.  Ellen was born on October 20, 1950 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  A summa cum laude graduate of Pfeiffer University, Ellen worked for more than 20 years in the Elkin Public School System.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Redfern and is survived by her husband, Bob Hillyer, children, Ashley Gibbon, Ryan Hillyer, and Courtney Opalacz, as well as 7 grandchildren.

Ellen was an avid reader who loved to travel, spend time with her grandchildren, and was always up for a game of Jeopardy. Her greatest gift was being whatever those around her needed the most; bold when action was demanded, empathetic when someone could use a shoulder to cry on, charitable when needed; but always, always selfless.

A celebration of life will be conducted Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Cedarbrook Country Club.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to their local public library.
